How To: Custom Foil Application

Learn how to Elevate Your custom garments using textile foil and Howard Multi-Purpose.

What You Need

Did you know? To create custom foil prints, all you need is textile foil and our best-selling Howard Multi-Purpose transfer. A simple Google search will help you find an affordable textile foil. Generally available in a 12”x25’ roll, it can be purchased in a multitude of colors and even some unique patterns. Howard Multi-Purpose can be ordered HERE.

Textile foil comes in 12”x25’ rolls and is available in a plethora of fun colors and patterns.

STEP 1: Apply Howard Multi-Purpose

First, you’ll want to apply your Howard Multi-Purpose transfer at the recommended application settings: 350F for 10-12 seconds. Why Howard Multi-Purpose? This transfer option is produced using a powdered adhesive which is required for the foil application.

We recommend ordering your transfers in a shade or tone close to the foil you plan to use. This is because the foil layer will not withstand the same amount of washing as the Howard Multi-Purpose application. As the foil begins to fade, the transfer underneath will be visible. If you choose a similar color transfer, the fading of the foil will be less noticeable.

TIP: Because the foil will stick to the adhesive, make sure the transfer is free from all excess powder before beginning application. Gently rub the areas of the paper carrier that do not have ink to make sure the carrier is clean.

The closest stock color option to this gold foil was Old Gold.

While using a shimmer color isn’t necessary, it’s a great option.

Choose a transfer color similar in tone to your foil color.

Step 2: Apply Textile Foil

Next, cut a piece of foil large enough to cover your transfer. Lay the foil on top of your applied design with the foil facing up. Cover the foil with a piece of silicone or parchment paper and apply at 350F for 10 seconds with FIRM pressure. Most importantly, you should peel when the foil has completely cooled. You may need to do some testing and adjust these settings depending on the brand of textile foil you choose.

TIP: Use a cloth to gently smooth away any foil that didn’t tear away from the transfer after peeling.

Apply the foil facing up, directly onto the Howard Multi-Purpose transfer.

Be sure to peel the foil once it has completely cooled.

Foil is very delicate and won’t withstand the same washing as plastisol transfers themselves. Foil garments should be washed on a gentle cycle, inside out. If possible, line dry to help elongate the life of the foil application. Be sure to pass along these care instructions to your customer.
